Man shot in Eastleigh robbery suffered serious spinal cord injuries - doctor

Doctors say Adan Ali Mohamed, 26, needs a procedure to stabilise the spine and decompress the spinal cord in order to recover.

The man who was shot in Eastleigh, Nairobi, in a daylight robbery in which his $30,000 was stolen, needs specialised treatment for spinal cord injuries.

Adan Ali Mohamed, 26, was attacked on Muratina Street while on a bodaboda, on his way back from the BBS Mall, where he had intended to deposit the money had his bank been open.

The Saturday incident that was captured on CCTV shows two armed assailants accosting Adan and his rider, while also on a bodaboda.

One gets off the motorcycle and approaches Adan, pointing a pistol at him and demanding the money. He is shot and the money stolen.

Pedestrians rushed Adan to Health Gate Hospital, where a doctor said he needed advanced medical attention as the bullet went through his neck and exited from the back, leaving him with spinal cord injuries.

"Immediately after the injury, the patient could not sense his legs. When he was brought to the hospital, we managed to take care of him immediately. We did imaging and a CT scan, which confirmed he had serious injuries in the spinal cord," the doctor said.

"He requires a procedure to stabilise the spine and decompress the spinal cord for him to recover."

Earlier, Mohamednur Ibrahim, the victim's relative, expressed concern for his well-being, stating, "We will take him for an MRI and then bring him back to Health Gate."

Adan's family said the money was from a cooking oil business.

"When he got to the bank, he found it was closed so he informed his partner, who told him to take a bodaboda and leave. However, within half a kilometre, unknown robbers attacked, shot him through the neck and left with the money," a man who spoke on behalf of the family told Citizen TV.

The incident added to growing concerns over insecurity in Eastleigh, with a particular focus on bodaboda-related crimes.

A resident said, "We are appealing to the government to deploy enough security in the area since this is not the first incident. Those found culpable should be brought to book."

On Sunday, detectives visited the scene and assessed the CCTV footage as part of the investigation. Starehe Police Commander Fred Abuga said they were searching for the two robbers.

Residents were urged to exercise caution and report suspicious activities to the authorities.
